Gordan Parks was a self-taught photographer who went on to direct the first major motion picture by an African-American, Shaft. Parks bought his first camera for $7.50 later becoming a staff photographer for LIFE, a renown fashion photographer for Vogue, and even an accomplished writer & composer.

Howard Bingham also a self-taught photographer became Muhammad Ali's personal photographer and life long friend. In Ali Bingham's role is portrayed by Jeffery Wright.
