life.style: Black Celebration - 7 of 28

"Whatever you do, do it with style!"

Growing up I thoroughly enjoyed cooking, entertaining, and home decorating programs on tv. I dreamed about being an adult with an immaculately decorated house, hosting parties for friends, serving gourmet-worthy canapés and signature drinks (I actually still have those dreams). Martha Stewart was my go-to life.style guru for many years - that is, until middle school when I happened upon a show called B. Smith With Style.

 B. (Barbara) Smith hosted the program and offered such creative ideas on cooking, decorating, gardening, and even fashion and beauty. She had an engaging spirit, warm smile, and was absolutely gorgeous (not surprising since she began her career as a fashion model and was the first African-American woman to grace the cover of  Mademoiselle magazine). How refreshing was it to see a beautiful black woman publicly showcasing life.style concepts when our mothers and grandmothers had been doing in behind-the-scenes for years without notice!

In addition to being a television show host, B. Smith is an author of three books and a restaurateur, owning three successful restaurants. Smith also developed a home decor collection for Bed Bath & Beyond, the B. Smith with Style Home Collection, which is the first line from an African-American woman to be sold at a nationwide retailer.

As an entrepreneur and entertainer, B. Smith is still inspiring little brown girls to do everything with elegance and style!
